The more stuff you have, the more difficult your move is going to be. Movers are happy to haul your junk wherever you need, as long as you’re willing to pay the price. Decluttering before your move helps you save money and reap the intangible benefits of getting rid of stuff you don’t need.

1. Start with the easy stuff

Most of us already know we need to clean up and organize, but we usually end up doing literally anything else instead. Why? Usually, it’s because we overwhelm ourselves by looking at everything that needs to be done. Instead of looking at the big picture, start small and take it slow.

5. Remember that you have an emotional connection to your stuff

Getting rid of stuff is harder than you think because of the emotional attachments we feel. You might think that this is silly and doesn’t apply to you, but as soon as you try cleaning up you’ll find yourself rationalizing keeping old trinkets you haven’t seen in years!

Successfully decluttering your house means you can’t keep stuff out of guilt. That pile of birthday cards is a sentimental reminder of your friends and family, but is it something you really want to bring to your new place? Where are you going to keep them?
